Sukelluskuvia ja vähän pinnan päältäkin - The diving post of this holiday (prepare for portraits above the water too)

English version below

On tullut aika kertoa tämän reissun sukelluksista kootusti ja kiltisti yhdessä postauksessa. Jälleen kerran on vierailtu dr.

Sukellusporukkaa ja kalustoa - The diving crew and boat

Pieni kalanen kiven kolossa piilossa. - Little puffer fish trying to hide under a rock.

Murena kolostaan pilkistää - Murrey eel peeking out
Similan on kansallispuisto.

Bongaa kalat - Spot the fishes
Me ollaan fisujen kotona, vierailijoita.

*English version*

So the time has come to wrap things up and tell you about this holidays diving. Yet again we have visited dr. Chusak office and therefore diving has been less than we anticipated. This year brought with it a set of new skills, in the form of Nitrox certification. We will benefit from this in the future live-a-board trips, if such things are booked.

As we arrived we canceled the first dive day, because of pure exhaustion. Diving requires top performance and is hard work, so not a good idea to go on a trip feeling tired even before the day has begun. When playing with ones life, better play it safe. Following 1,5 weeks offered trips to the Similan Islands from 4-8 and Koh Bon three times in search of the Manta ray.

This year we felt like the waters were empty. It felt like there was sand, rocks and some corals, but only few fishes and nothing special to see. Coral bleach seemed to have gotten worse and only occasionally we saw more than two fishes at one place. The dive guides said corals have actually gotten better, but I am not sure if that is just something they say to calm the dive tourists minds?

Young sea star - Nuori meritähtönen
Coral bleach is due to the temperature, and also due to us people coming and messing with the ecosystem. There are tons of speedboats coming to the area and they wanna offer their guests a fish show. They do this by offering fish some toast that is sprinkled to the sea. Fish come to eat and leave their normal food (algae on top of coral) behind. When they don't eat normal food, fish doesn't get nutrients they need to survive. In addition coral reefs will suffocate when fish don't clean the algae... And when corals die, fish will go away or die and in the end the ocean will become a desert like place.

Stingray only as a living one this year - Stingray vain elikkona tällä reissulla
Divers hurt corals too. By touching intentionally or because trying to save themselves from currents and other things. People want to collect items from the ocean to have with them and end up hurting the delicate ecosystem. All this has been forbidden in the Similan national park area. There is no stepping or grabbing the corals or anything else for that matter. Divers are not allowed to wear gloves for protection. This should ensure that divers don't want to touch anything, because it might hurt them. The sanction for breaking this rule is thousands of tbh.

If diver takes something with them from the ocean the fine is 40 000 tbh or even jail time. Still we saw a diving crew covered from head to toe lying on corals trying to take pictures. I wanted to punch them, but decided to behave... I don't get how I would benefit from a piece of the ocean at my house, when leaving it where it belongs offers the joy of seeing it for thousand others.

NOT our cruise ship :)
As a summary I try to think we are visitors in sea creatures homes. That means I am there only to visit and not mess with things. I wouldn't appreciate people coming to my house uninvited and then trashing the place. Therefore I do my best to behave whilst diving. Not touching, not bothering any creature and just watching the mesmerising sealife.

Future years will surely come with some diving, but I am not sure if we will return to Thailand any time soon. It feels that after five years we have seen all the sights here many times. Maybe Egypt or some other exotic place next? Surely it is not going to be Finland where the waters are cold and murky. Not my cup of tea.
